Bournemouth piled more pressure on Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick with a convincing 3-0 Premier League victory at Old Trafford on Sunday, October 25, scoring twice before half-time before Evanilson sealed the win in the second half.
Rayan opened the scoring in the 38th minute, Marcus Tavernier doubled Bournemouth’s advantage five minutes later and Evanilson added the third in the 71st minute as United failed to find a response on a frustrating afternoon for the home supporters.
The defeat extended United’s winless run to eight games in all competitions and followed their 4-1 loss away to Como in midweek.
Carrick had made four changes to his starting line-up, including leaving captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench, but his side struggled to contain Bournemouth’s attacks and were punished for costly defensive mistakes.
Bournemouth threatened early, with Rayan heading over from a corner before Harry Maguire blocked another attempt from the Brazilian. Leny Yoro also produced an important clearance to prevent Evanilson from converting Rayan’s cross, while Diogo Dalot sent United’s first notable effort over the bar.
The breakthrough came after Ayden Heaven was booked for a challenge that conceded a free-kick in a dangerous position. Justin Kluivert delivered the ball into the penalty area, where Rayan found space at the far post and fired past goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
United nearly equalised immediately when Mason Mount released Bryan Mbeumo, but Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic pushed the forward’s effort around the post.
The visitors struck again in the 43rd minute after Yoro slipped outside his own penalty area. Adrien Truffert seized the opportunity and set up Tavernier, who finished from close range to send Bournemouth into the break with a two-goal lead.
Carrick introduced Matheus Cunha for Youri Tielemans at half-time in an attempt to revive United’s performance. However, Bournemouth briefly thought they had scored a third shortly after the restart when Evanilson found the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Lammens subsequently denied Rayan another opportunity, while United tried to build pressure through Dalot’s deliveries and efforts from Mbeumo. The hosts, however, struggled to turn their possession into goals.
Bournemouth put the result beyond doubt in the 71st minute. Lewis Cook sent a long ball forward, forcing Lammens out of his penalty area. With the windy conditions affecting the ball’s flight, Evanilson got past the goalkeeper and finished from a tight angle into the unguarded net.
United made further changes, with Joshua Zirkzee replacing Carlos Baleba in the 72nd minute and Shea Lacey coming on for Amad Diallo in the 78th. Lisandro Martinez had replaced Heaven in the 65th minute. Bournemouth introduced Ben Gannon-Doak for Kluivert in the 63rd minute and Ryan Christie for Cook in the 75th, before Amine Adli, Bafode Diakite and Eli Junior Kroupi came on in the 87th minute for Tavernier, Adam Smith and Evanilson respectively.
Yoro nearly scored a consolation goal late on after controlling a long ball from Lammens, but his effort was blocked by James Hill.
The match also produced five yellow cards in the first half. United’s Andrey Santos was booked in the 22nd minute, followed by Bournemouth’s Tyler Adams in the 27th. Heaven received his booking in the 37th minute, Tielemans was cautioned in the 40th and Maguire was booked in first-half stoppage time.
United finished with 63 per cent possession and 17 shots, compared with Bournemouth’s 37 per cent possession and 10 attempts. However, the visitors registered four shots on target to United’s three and were far more effective in front of goal.
The result left United 16th in the Premier League standings on seven points after eight matches, just one point above the relegation zone. Bournemouth moved to 13th with nine points.
Frustration was evident at Old Trafford at the final whistle, with home supporters directing their anger towards the club’s leadership and booing the players. Fernandes remained an unused substitute as questions over Carrick’s future intensified.
United are scheduled to play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31, while Bournemouth are set to host Leeds United on the same day.
