MotoGP championship contender Jorge Martin has been declared unfit to race after suffering a fracture to his right wrist in a high-speed crash during the Australian Grand Prix sprint at Phillip Island.

The Aprilia rider crashed out while battling reigning world champion Marc Marquez for the lead, handing his title rival a significant advantage in the championship standings ahead of the main race.

Martin was taken to the medical centre for assessment after the crash, with doctors subsequently confirming that he was unfit to continue racing following the wrist injury.

The incident occurred on lap eight of the sprint as the two Spaniards engaged in an intense battle for victory on a track that had dried out following earlier rain showers.

Martin had made an impressive start from fourth on the grid, moving into second place behind Marquez, who had secured pole position.

Gresini Racing rider Alex Marquez initially dropped back after starting second but recovered positions to join the battle at the front. Martin, however, quickly moved past him and launched an attack on Marc Marquez on lap three, briefly taking the lead at Turn 10.

The lead changed hands several times as the pair pushed each other through the technical Phillip Island circuit.

Martin regained the advantage on lap six after another exchange with Marquez, but an error at Turn Four allowed the Ducati rider to move back ahead.

The contest intensified on lap eight, with the two riders exchanging positions through the opening corners. However, Martin's challenge ended abruptly when he lost control at Turn Eight and slid into the gravel at an estimated speed of 180 kilometres per hour.

Track marshals rushed to assist the Spaniard before he was carried away on a stretcher and transported to the medical centre for further examination.

Martin's retirement proved decisive in the championship battle, with Marquez going on to secure victory and reclaim the lead in the standings.

Alex Marquez finished second, while Ducati's Fabio di Giannantonio completed the podium in third place after recovering from eighth on the starting grid.

Marco Bezzecchi was the leading Aprilia rider, recovering from 12th position on the opening lap to finish fourth. KTM's Pedro Acosta came home fifth, while Ai Ogura secured sixth place after starting 12th.

The sprint victory was Marquez's ninth of the season and gave him a 10-point advantage over Martin in the championship standings, representing a 12-point swing between the two title contenders during the race.

Martin's wrist fracture and declaration as unfit to race cast uncertainty over his participation in the remainder of the Australian Grand Prix weekend, potentially dealing a further setback to his championship campaign.

His absence would also leave Aprilia facing a major challenge as the team seeks to remain competitive against Ducati in the closing stages of the season.
