A 54-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of a 35-year-old mentally ill man who was allegedly attacked by a mob after being mistaken for a thief in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County.
The victim, Dennis Imboha, had reportedly wandered away from his home before ending up at a neighbouring homestead in Milimani Location, Kiminini Sub-County.
According to detectives, residents allegedly mistook him for a thief and subjected him to a violent assault, leaving him with multiple serious injuries.
Imboha was rushed to Kijana Wamalwa Hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical care.
Detectives who visited the scene collected evidence as they began investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.
His body was moved to the hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
An intelligence-led operation in Milimani Location later led to the arrest of 54-year-old Joseph Apollo, who is being processed before being arraigned in court.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said investigations are ongoing as detectives pursue other suspects believed to have been involved in the fatal assault.
The DCI has urged members of the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspected criminals to the authorities.
