Veteran Kenyan journalist Yvonne Okwara has joined Shuga Global as Head of Investments and Partnerships, a day after ending her eight-and-a-half-year stint at Citizen TV.
The organisation announced her appointment on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, outlining plans to draw on her experience in corporate communications, fundraising and government relations as it expands its reach and seeks more sustainable funding.
Okwara signed off from Citizen TV on Tuesday, October 27, during her final appearance on The Explainer, closing a chapter at the Royal Media Services-owned broadcaster that formed a significant part of her two-decade career in journalism.
During her farewell, she reflected on her professional journey and reaffirmed her belief in journalism’s role in holding leaders accountable and giving ordinary people a voice.
“I am not done building. I am simply moving to build something else,” Okwara said, signalling a new direction without disclosing the details of her next assignment during the broadcast.
Shuga Global subsequently confirmed the appointment in an announcement introducing Okwara as its new Head of Investments and Partnerships.
“Shuga Global understands that our communities need opportunities for expanded reach beyond grant-dependency,” the organisation said, explaining its decision to bring her on board.
The organisation described Okwara as a corporate communications expert with experience in fundraising and government relations. It also highlighted her contribution to journalism and media, as well as her involvement in development partnerships.
In her new position, Okwara is expected to build strategic relationships, identify funding opportunities and mobilise resources to support the organisation’s programmes and long-term sustainability.
The appointment comes as Shuga Global rebrands and seeks to widen its international reach while reducing its reliance on grant funding.
Formerly known as the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, Shuga Global is a nonprofit organisation that uses storytelling and mass media to engage young people on health, wellbeing and social issues.
Its approach combines entertainment with information intended to help young people make informed decisions about their lives. The organisation works through broadcasters, digital platforms and community partnerships to reach youth audiences.
The new role places Okwara in a position that draws on her background in journalism, business and public affairs, shifting her professional focus beyond daily television news presentation.
Okwara joined Citizen TV in May 2018 after working at other media organisations, including KTN News. During her time at the station, she became a prominent face of its news and current affairs coverage and was associated with programmes including News Gang and The Explainer.
Her departure marks the end of more than eight years at Citizen TV, while the Shuga Global appointment opens a new chapter in a career spanning approximately two decades.
The organisation said her leadership would support its mission of empowering young people by strengthening partnerships, mobilising resources and improving its long-term financial sustainability.
