A 36-year-old woman suspected of masquerading as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya has been arrested by detectives from Kitengela Police Station over allegations of obtaining Sh82,000 by false pretences.
The suspect, identified as Maureen Auma Andary, was arrested today at Chuna Mall in Kitengela after detectives received intelligence that she was allegedly posing as a qualified advocate and conducting fraudulent transactions.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Andary had been presenting herself to members of the public as an advocate and allegedly claimed to be working with Wafula & Co. Advocates, Kitengela.
According to detectives, the case came to their attention on September 11, 2026, when a report was made following concerns over the suspect’s activities.
Investigators established that the suspect allegedly obtained Sh82,000 from a client after falsely representing that she would file applications in relation to a matter pending before the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi.
The client is said to have entrusted the money to Andary believing that she was a qualified legal practitioner capable of handling the court-related proceedings.
Following the report, detectives launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the transaction and verify the suspect’s alleged professional credentials.
The investigations eventually led detectives to Chuna Mall, where Andary was arrested today. She was subsequently taken into custody as investigators continue to establish the full extent of the alleged fraudulent activities.
Detectives are now widening their investigations to determine whether other members of the public may have been approached by the suspect or lost money through similar representations.
The case also highlights the risks posed by individuals who falsely claim professional qualifications in order to gain the trust of unsuspecting members of the public.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has urged members of the public to exercise caution when engaging individuals offering legal and other professional services.
The DCI has advised the public to verify the credentials, registration status and professional affiliations of service providers before entrusting them with money, personal information or important documents.
Andary remains in custody as investigations continue, with further action expected once the inquiry is completed.
