East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Winnie Odinga has announced that she intends to contest the Nairobi County Senate seat in the 2027 General Election.

She made the declaration while speaking at a gathering marking the first death anniversary of her father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, widely known as Baba, in Bondo, Siaya county.

Odinga referred to current Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna before explaining why she plans to enter the race and linked Sifuna’s ambitions to her own decision.

“I’ve seen that there’s a visitor here from Nairobi. His name is Edwin Sifuna. As Edwin Sifuna searches for higher office, I see an opening, an opportunity in Nairobi. That is why I have decided that I will stand for the Senate of Nairobi County,” she said.

Her announcement puts her forward as a potential challenger for a seat currently held by Sifuna, who was elected Nairobi senator in 2022.

Her remark that she sees an opportunity in Nairobi as Sifuna pursues higher office of the presidential seat suggests she expects the city’s political landscape to change before the next election.

The gathering brought together supporters and political allies remembering Raila Odinga one year after his death.

Winnie’s announcement added an electoral dimension to the occasion, drawing attention to her own political plans.
By naming a specific seat and election year, Odinga has publicly stated her intention to seek elected office in Kenya.

Her announcement may prompt discussion within Nairobi’s political circles about party nominations, potential challengers and the direction of the 2027 race.

Odinga did not specify which party ticket she will seek and the final field of candidates is not yet known. Those details are likely to emerge as parties prepare for the election and nominations draw closer.

For now, she has made her intention clear: she plans to run for Nairobi senator in 2027. Her declaration at the first anniversary gathering connected her political plans to the moment of remembrance and drew an enthusiastic response from the crowd.
