Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has resigned from his leadership position within the Azimio La Umoja–One Kenya Coalition, saying the move is necessary to allow the coalition to renew its democratic institutions.

In a letter dated Monday, October 5, 2026, and addressed to the Azimio party leader, co-principals, National Steering Committee and coalition members, Kenyatta said his resignation takes effect immediately.

The former President said the decision follows the official handover of the Jubilee Party leadership.

“This decision is not a departure from our shared political journey, but a necessary step in the continuous renewal of our democratic institutions,” Kenyatta said.

He described Azimio as a coalition founded on the principle that Kenya’s diverse political voices must come together to safeguard democracy and promote national development.

Kenyatta compared the coalition to a river formed by several tributaries, saying political parties can retain their individual identities while contributing to a stronger collective movement.

He said his role in the coalition had been to help guide the different political forces towards unity and prevent internal divisions from weakening the coalition.

The former President also said leadership requires creating space for the next generation, arguing that leaders should have the courage to step aside and allow others to take responsibility.

“I step down from this office with a heart full of gratitude for the trust you have placed in me, and with absolute confidence in the collective strength of this coalition,” he said.

Despite relinquishing his leadership position, Kenyatta said he remains a committed member of the Azimio family and will continue supporting the coalition from the ranks.

He also pledged to offer counsel whenever called upon.

“May the Almighty guide your steps, protect our coalition, and forever bless our republic,” he said.

Kenyatta served as Kenya’s fourth President from 2013 to 2022.

He relinquished his formal leadership of the Jubilee Party on September 22, 2026, handing over the party's leadership to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.

While stepping down from formal party office, Kenyatta announced he will remain a party member, attend meetings, and serve as a senior adviser.
