A trail that began with a break-in and theft from a locked motor vehicle reported in Murang’a in May 2025 has led detectives to Nairobi, where three suspects have been arrested and 32 suspected stolen mobile phones recovered. The incident in Murang’a marked the start of an extensive investigation that would eventually connect local law enforcement with their counterparts in the capital city.
Detectives from Murang’a East Sub-County, working with their counterparts from DCI Central Nairobi, arrested Michael Waweru, Wilson Wanjama and Samuel Kimani during an operation in Nairobi’s Central Business District. This collaboration between the two police units highlights the importance of inter-county cooperation in tackling crime that transcends regional boundaries.
A search of their premises led to the recovery of 32 assorted mobile phones and a tablet, all suspected to be stolen. The recovery of these items is significant, as it not only represents a step toward solving the initial theft case but also sheds light on a larger network of stolen goods that may be operating in the area.
In addition to the mobile phones, detectives also recovered a MacBook Air, a Lightwave cash-counting machine, 22 empty mobile-phone boxes without IMEI numbers, counter books, notebooks and 12 receipt books. The presence of these items suggests that the suspects may have been involved in the handling, packaging and sale of illegally obtained mobile phones. The empty phone boxes without IMEI numbers are particularly concerning, as they indicate an attempt to mask the identities of the stolen devices, making it more difficult for law enforcement to trace their origins.
The three suspects were escorted to Murang’a Police Station, where they remain in custody as detectives complete investigations ahead of their arraignment. The ongoing investigation is expected to delve deeper into the suspects' activities and potentially uncover more stolen property or additional accomplices. Authorities are urging anyone who may have information related to this case or similar incidents to come forward, as community involvement is crucial in the fight against crime.
As the investigation continues, the recovery of these stolen items serves as a reminder of the persistent issue of theft and the importance of vigilance in protecting personal property. Law enforcement agencies are committed to addressing these crimes and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.
