A Tanzanian couple suspected of running a stupefying and robbery racket targeting unsuspecting bus passengers has been arrested in Mombasa.
The suspects are accused of drugging passengers and stealing their valuables after boarding buses travelling between Nairobi and Mombasa.
The latest case was reported on September 18, 2026, after a passenger boarded a Dreamline bus from Nairobi to Mombasa. During the journey, the passenger was allegedly stupefied by a man seated next to him and lost consciousness.
He later regained consciousness at Tudor Sub-County Hospital, where he discovered that his bag and other personal belongings were missing.
Detectives from Makupa Police Station launched investigations and followed forensic leads that led them to Magongo, where they arrested Pius Paskale Frugenze, 52, and his wife, Redempta Revelian Kuleta, 47, both Tanzanian nationals.
A search of their house led to the recovery of the complainant’s HP laptop and iPhone 17 Pro Max, providing a breakthrough in the investigation.
Detectives also recovered several mobile phones, 20 phone chargers, 10 wristwatches, 20 wallets and assorted clothing believed to be stolen. Substances suspected to be stupefying drugs were also recovered.
The two suspects remain in custody as they undergo processing ahead of their arraignment, while the recovered items have been detained as exhibits.
