Police have intercepted a vehicle suspected to have been transporting illicit second-generation alcohol from Uganda in an intelligence-led operation in Trans Nzoia County. This operation highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat the illegal alcohol trade that poses significant health risks to communities across the region.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices in Kiminini and Chwele intercepted a Toyota Wish, registration number KBV 525J, which was being pursued from Kiminini towards the Mali Saba (Emuro) area. The swift action taken by the DCI officers underscores the importance of intelligence-led operations in tackling organized crime, particularly in areas known for smuggling activities.

Police operation details

The driver and a passenger reportedly abandoned the vehicle while it was still running after realising they were being pursued by police. In a desperate attempt to evade capture, the suspects lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently veered off the road, hit a roadside structure and came to a stop. This incident not only illustrates the lengths to which individuals will go to escape law enforcement but also raises concerns about road safety in the area, particularly when high-speed chases are involved.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of 24 cartons of Jonney’s alcohol, each containing 24 bottles of 200ml, as well as 10 cartons of White Gin, each containing 24 bottles of 200ml. The sheer volume of illicit alcohol recovered indicates a significant operation aimed at distributing these harmful substances within local communities. The presence of second-generation alcohol, often unregulated and potentially dangerous, further emphasizes the need for stringent measures to control such activities.

Illicit alcohol recovery

The vehicle was towed to Kiminini Police Station, where the recovered alcohol was secured as investigations continue. The police have stated that they are pursuing the driver, passenger and owner of the vehicle as they seek to establish the source and intended destination of the consignment. This ongoing investigation is crucial in dismantling the networks that facilitate the trafficking of illicit alcohol across borders.

Ongoing investigation efforts

The DCI said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the trafficking and distribution of illicit alcohol and protect communities from its harmful effects. These efforts are vital not only for public health but also for ensuring that local economies are not undermined by the illegal alcohol trade. The police are calling on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to the sale or distribution of illicit alcohol, as community involvement is key in the fight against this pervasive issue.
