JOHANNESBURG — South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has temporarily withdrawn from public engagements due to ill health after returning from the BRICS Summit in India.
The Presidency announced on Wednesday that Ramaphosa had been advised by his medical team to rest and recover. It did not disclose the nature of his illness or indicate when he is expected to resume public duties.
Ramaphosa returned to South Africa on Monday after attending the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, held on September 12 and 13.
The summit brought together leaders of BRICS member and partner countries, with discussions covering global economic cooperation, trade and international security issues.
“Where possible, the president has asked the respective ministers to represent him at scheduled public engagements,” the Presidency said.
Ramaphosa's temporary absence coincides with that of Deputy President Paul Mashatile, who is recovering after undergoing what his office described as a minor medical procedure.
Mashatile said on Tuesday that his recovery was progressing well and that he was regaining strength each day. He said he would remain on rest on the advice of his doctors while responsibilities continued to be handled through his office.
The temporary absence of South Africa's two most senior government leaders comes less than two months before the country's Local Government Elections scheduled for November 4, 2026.
South Africa's Electoral Commission has confirmed the election date and is continuing preparations for the municipal polls.
The Presidency has not announced how long Ramaphosa will remain away from public engagements.
