Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has hit back at President William Ruto after the Head of State criticised him over his demand for the agreement between the Kenyan government and businessman Aliko Dangote on the planned refinery in Lamu.
Sifuna cited Article 35 of the Constitution, which guarantees every citizen access to information held by the State and requires the government to publish and publicise important information affecting the nation.
He said that the disclosure of government information is a constitutional obligation and should not be left to an individual's discretion.
“Disclosure of information is a Constitutional imperative, not something left to the whims of one person,” Sifuna said.
The Senator also criticised what he described as secretive deals negotiated without public scrutiny, saying such practices would end under a future administration.
His remarks came hours after Ruto accused Sifuna of seeking to obtain the Dangote agreement outside Parliament and alleged that the Senator was part of an extortionist ring targeting governors.
Ruto said the agreement should be sought through Parliament and maintained that he would not hand the document directly to Sifuna or other opposition leaders.
