Several people were injured after being burnt while attempting to siphon petrol from a tanker that overturned at Buema village in Kanduyi Constituency, Bungoma County.
The tanker was travelling from Kanduyi towards the Malaba border when the driver lost control a few metres before a bridge and the vehicle overturned, spilling fuel from its tanks. The driver fled the scene after the accident.
Residents who rushed to the scene attempted to collect the spilled petrol, prompting police officers to intervene.
The officers were forced to lob tear gas to disperse the growing crowd. A huge fire broke out during the incident, sending residents scrambling for safety.
