The family of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga has announced plans to mark the first anniversary of his death with a series of commemorative activities aimed at giving Kenyans an opportunity to mourn, remember and celebrate his life.
In a statement issued on Sunday, September 13, 2026, the family said it was conscious that many Kenyans did not get an opportunity to mourn Raila in the manner they wished following his death, and therefore wanted the anniversary to provide a moment for “Baba’s people” to say goodbye.
The family has constituted a committee chaired by Prof. Adams Oloo to coordinate the commemorative activities planned for the week of the 15th.
The committee is currently developing the programme, which the family said will be announced in due course.
The family has urged individuals and groups wishing to participate, support or organise activities as part of the anniversary celebrations to do so through the committee to ensure proper coordination and an inclusive commemoration.
The statement emphasised that there would be room for people from every community, generation and part of the country who shared different chapters of Raila’s life.
The family said the anniversary belongs neither to an individual nor an institution, but to the people whose lives Raila touched.
“Baba’s people will not be left behind,” the family assured, while appealing for patience as preparations for the commemorations are finalised.
Odinga died at the age of 80 on October 15, 2025, after suffering a heart attack while on a medical trip to India.
