The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a police constable suspected of killing lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu in Nairobi, more than a year after the fatal shooting.
Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot was arrested following investigations into the September 9, 2025, shooting along Magadi Road, where Mbobu was attacked while driving home from work.
In a statement issued on September 24, 2026, the DCI said detectives had also recovered a Ceska pistol that had been issued to the officer.
Ballistic tests reportedly confirmed that the firearm was used in the shooting that claimed Mbobu’s life, providing investigators with a key piece of evidence.
The DCI further linked the case to the killing of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, who was shot dead in Upper Hill, Nairobi, on July 29, 2026.
According to investigators, Inspector Kenneth Sang, who is still at large, allegedly coordinated the operation alongside Rose Mbithe, who is currently in custody over Mutiso’s murder.
The DCI said specialised homicide detectives and forensic experts had been working to establish the circumstances surrounding Mbobu’s killing.
The agency also extended its condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of Mbobu and Mutiso, pledging to pursue all those suspected to have been involved, regardless of their position or affiliation.
Cheruiyot remains in police custody as he undergoes processing ahead of his arraignment in court.
The DCI said investigations are ongoing, with detectives pursuing further leads to establish the motive and the full circumstances surrounding the killing.
