An angry mob in Uriri, Migori County, has lynched a murder suspect accused of killing a woman who had gone to demand Ksh.700 he allegedly owed her. This shocking incident has raised concerns about mob justice in the region, highlighting the dangers that arise when community members take the law into their own hands. The suspect, identified as Oburu Onyango, was attacked and killed at Uriri Trading Market by members of the public who had been trailing him after the woman's disappearance.
Uriri Sub-county Police Commander Ali Bashir confirmed the incident, stating that the police were alerted to the situation but were unable to rescue Onyango from the mob. The swift and violent actions of the crowd reflect a growing frustration within the community regarding crime and the perceived inadequacy of law enforcement to protect citizens. Bashir said police officers rushed to the scene but were unable to rescue Onyango from the mob, illustrating the challenges faced by law enforcement in such volatile situations.
The tragic series of events began when the woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, failed to return home after leaving to confront Onyango about the Ksh.700 debt. Her husband, Kennedy Onyango, reported her disappearance after she did not come back home as expected. According to Bashir, the woman had left home earlier in the day to demand the Ksh.700 from the suspect but did not return. This prompted her husband, who had left home in the morning to buy items in Awendo town, to grow increasingly worried about her whereabouts.
As the hours passed with no word from her, Kennedy, alongside family members and concerned members of the public, initiated a search for the missing woman. The search team found the woman’s body dumped in a sugarcane plantation a few metres from the suspect’s home, a discovery that shocked the community and intensified the anger directed towards Onyango.
In the wake of the lynching, police have launched investigations into the woman’s death as well as the subsequent lynching of the suspect. The authorities are expected to look into the circumstances surrounding both incidents, aiming to bring justice to the victim and address the community's concerns about safety and accountability. The events in Uriri underscore the need for effective policing and community engagement to prevent such tragic outcomes in the future.
