Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni’s son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has backed President William Ruto’s bid for a second term, saying National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula will serve as his “Mutume” in Kenya. In a post on X, Muhoozi said he had enough “Batume” in Uganda and was appointing Wetang’ula as his “Mutume” in Kenya.

“Now that I have enough Batume in Uganda, I appoint Rt. Honourable Moses Wetangula as my Mutume in Kenya. He will support my President @WilliamsRuto's re-election. Tunataka Second term,” Muhoozi wrote. “Mutume” is a Luganda word meaning messenger or envoy. This endorsement from Muhoozi, who has significant influence in Ugandan politics, is seen as a strategic move to strengthen ties between Uganda and Kenya, particularly in the context of Ruto's upcoming election campaign.

Muhoozi’s remarks were backed by Daudi Kabanda, the Kasambya County MP and Executive Secretary in the office of the National Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda. Kabanda described Wetang’ula as “Afande’s Mutume in Kenya” in a post accompanying Muhoozi’s message. This endorsement from a prominent Ugandan politician further emphasizes the collaborative effort between the two nations as they navigate their political landscapes.

Wetang’ula has previously publicly backed Ruto’s re-election bid, with the Speaker calling for support for the President as he seeks a second term in 2027. The support from both Muhoozi and Wetang’ula highlights the growing political alliance between Uganda and Kenya, which could have significant implications for regional stability and cooperation. As the 2027 elections approach, such endorsements may play a crucial role in shaping voter sentiment and influencing the political atmosphere in both countries.
