Presidential candidate David Maraga has pledged to expand access to business financing and improve systems supporting young entrepreneurs if elected President. Maraga, who is the leader of the United Green Movement (UGM) Party, made these remarks during his interaction with Kenyans in Houston, Texas. This event was significant as it highlighted the diaspora's role in Kenya's economy, particularly through remittances, which he put at 2.7 billion dollars annually.
During his address, Maraga emphasized the importance of the Kenyan diaspora in contributing to the country's economic growth. He pointed out that the financial support sent back home plays a crucial role in uplifting families and communities across Kenya. The remittances from Kenyans abroad not only provide immediate financial relief but also serve as a catalyst for local businesses and investments.
Importance of the Kenyan diaspora
Maraga singled out Nellie and Dennis Chege, a couple who have made remarkable strides in their entrepreneurial journey. He noted that they had grown their business, Cypress Assisted Living, from a small three-person residential facility to four facilities that now serve 80 residents and employ 60 people. This success story exemplifies the entrepreneurial potential of Kenyan youth, which Maraga is committed to supporting through improved access to financing and efficient systems that foster business growth.
He further elaborated on his vision for young entrepreneurs, stating that his administration would implement policies aimed at making it easier for them to access the capital they need to start and expand their businesses. Maraga believes that by empowering the youth with the necessary resources and support systems, Kenya can harness the innovative spirit of its young population and drive economic growth.
Vision for young entrepreneurs
In addition to his plans for business financing, Maraga drew on his record as Chief Justice, highlighting his experience in establishing a judicial system that worked effectively. He expressed confidence that the same principles and strategies that led to a functional judiciary could be applied to governance.
Maraga's judicial experience
"As your Chief Justice, I put in place a judicial system that worked. As your President, I will deliver the same," Maraga said, reinforcing his commitment to transparency, accountability, and efficiency in leadership. His track record in the judiciary has positioned him as a candidate who understands the importance of a strong institutional framework, which he believes is essential for fostering a conducive environment for business and innovation.
Maraga's campaign is focused on the belief that by investing in the youth and supporting their entrepreneurial endeavors, Kenya can achieve sustainable economic development and improve the livelihoods of its citizens.
