A section of residents of Malava Constituency in Kakamega County staged demonstrations on Thursday and blocked the road leading to the West Kenya Sugar factory, demanding that the management honour its pledge to employ 70 percent of local residents at its new ethanol chemical manufacturing plant.
Carrying placards, the protesters barricaded the road, causing significant traffic congestion as trucks transporting sugarcane to the factory were held up.
The residents also criticised local leaders for remaining silent on the issue and failing to address their concerns.
However, Malava MP David Ndakwa said he had already presented the residents' grievances to the factory management, but their demands had yet to be addressed.
