A man has died following a hit-and-run accident at Egetai along the Kisii-Keroka highway, raising fresh concerns over road safety and the growing number of motorists fleeing accident scenes.

The deceased, identified as Clinton Tanchi, was reportedly riding a motorcycle from Kisii towards Keumbu during the night when he was struck by an unidentified vehicle.

According to a police report, the accident occurred at Egetai, where the motorcyclist was hit by the vehicle under circumstances that are yet to be established.

The driver of the vehicle reportedly fled the scene immediately after the collision, leaving Tanchi seriously injured on the road.

Good Samaritans who arrived at the scene rushed him to a nearby private hospital in an attempt to save his life.

However, medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival.

His body was later transferred to the mortuary at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination and other procedures.

Police have since launched investigations into the fatal accident, with efforts underway to identify and trace the vehicle involved and its driver.

Investigators are expected to rely on witness accounts and any available evidence from the scene to establish how the accident occurred and determine the circumstances under which the driver fled.

The incident adds to growing concerns over hit-and-run accidents, particularly involving vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists and pedestrians.

Motorcycle riders remain among the road users most exposed to serious injuries and fatalities in collisions, owing to limited physical protection compared to occupants of motor vehicles.

Police have urged motorists involved in accidents to stop, assist injured victims and report incidents to the relevant authorities instead of fleeing the scene.

Anyone with information that could help identify the vehicle or its driver has been urged to report to the nearest police station.

Police are also expected to establish whether the vehicle was speeding or whether other factors contributed to the crash.

The search for the driver comes amid renewed calls for motorists to exercise caution, particularly along busy highways, and for witnesses to volunteer information that could help bring those responsible for fatal road accidents to justice.

The investigation is ongoing.
