Liverpool suffered their first defeat in the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase after falling 3-2 to Fenerbahçe in Istanbul on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, despite taking the lead twice in a match decided by late defensive lapses.

The Reds looked on course for a positive response after Trey Nyoni and substitute Alexander Isak put them ahead on separate occasions. However, Mason Greenwood, Archie Brown and Vedat Muriqi scored for the hosts to complete a comeback that handed Liverpool their first defeat in this season's Champions League campaign.

Nyoni opened the scoring in the 25th minute with his first senior goal for Liverpool. The 19-year-old midfielder capitalised on a loose ball inside the penalty area after Virgil van Dijk contested a delivery, firing an effort that took a deflection before beating goalkeeper Ederson.

Fenerbahçe responded four minutes later when Greenwood's free-kick took a deflection off Jeremy Jacquet and wrong-footed Alisson Becker to restore parity.

Liverpool struggled to turn their possession into a decisive advantage before making changes in the second half, with Isak, Cody Gakpo and Florian Wirtz introduced as the visitors searched for another breakthrough.

The substitutions produced an immediate response in the 69th minute. Gakpo delivered a cross into the penalty area, allowing Isak to head home with his first touch and restore Liverpool's advantage.

However, the visitors failed to protect their lead once again. Archie Brown equalised in the 73rd minute after getting on the end of an N'Golo Kanté delivery following a corner routine, with Liverpool's defence unable to deal with the situation.

Fenerbahçe completed the turnaround six minutes later when Muriqi rose above Liverpool's defenders to head home from a long throw-in, leaving Alisson beaten and the visitors chasing the game.

The defeat left Liverpool with questions to answer over their defensive organisation, particularly after conceding from a free-kick, a corner and a long throw-in.

Head coach Andoni Iraola admitted that his side's inability to defend set-pieces had proved decisive, acknowledging that the goals were situations Liverpool should have handled better.

"The main reason I can find to lose the game is we conceded three set-pieces. Yes, as you say, they are cheap goals. They are messy goals," Iraola said after the match describing the goals as avoidable.

The Liverpool manager further expressed frustration at how quickly his side surrendered their advantages, noting that the team had produced good attacking moments but failed to maintain its defensive concentration.

Isak also admitted that Liverpool had not done enough to secure a positive result despite taking the lead twice.

"It's a bit sloppy that we had the lead twice and for us to then lose the game is not good enough. Obviously we're going to be disappointed from that," the Swedish striker said.

He added that Liverpool needed to respond positively, insisting that winning their next match would put them back in a good position.

The result ended Liverpool's perfect start to the Champions League league phase and marked their second consecutive defeat following a 1-0 loss to Arsenal in the Premier League.

Liverpool will now turn their attention to Crystal Palace, whom they face away from home on Sunday, November 8, as they seek to return to winning ways.
