Police officers have uprooted bhang worth an estimated Ksh.60 million from a three-acre plantation along the Tana River in Mwingi Central, Kitui County. This significant operation highlights the ongoing battle against illegal drug cultivation in the region, which has been a concern for law enforcement agencies and local communities alike.
Details of the operation
The operation was conducted in Kakongo Village, Kairungu Location, in Kiomo Kyethani Ward. It was initiated following intelligence reports regarding suspected large-scale cultivation of the illegal crop. Such intelligence is crucial in guiding police operations, as it allows them to target specific locations where illegal activities are suspected.
Community involvement in drug eradication
Officers from the National Police Service, in collaboration with National Government Administration Officers, raided the plantation. Upon arrival, they discovered that bhang had been planted alongside food crops, which appeared to be an attempt to conceal the illegal crop from authorities. This tactic of mixing illegal crops with legal ones is not uncommon among cultivators looking to evade detection.
With the assistance of members of the public, the officers uprooted the bhang and transported it to Mwingi Police Station. The total weight of the confiscated bhang was approximately two tonnes, a substantial amount that underscores the scale of the operation. The community's involvement in reporting such activities is vital, as it fosters a collaborative approach to combating drug-related crimes.
Equipment recovered during the raid
In addition to the bhang, the operation also led to the recovery of several pieces of equipment that are commonly associated with the cultivation of illegal crops. Among the items recovered were seven solar panels, five petrol-powered water pumps, six jembes, four pangas, two weighing scales, two fork jembes, two hacksaws, a solar control unit, assorted solar accessories, and 30 kilogrammes of CAN fertiliser. This equipment indicates the level of investment the cultivators had made in their operations, further highlighting the seriousness of the issue.
Moreover, personal documents suspected to belong to the cultivators were also recovered at the scene, providing potential leads for investigators. However, despite the successful operation, the suspected cultivators managed to escape before they could be arrested, which poses a challenge for law enforcement.

Detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau are now pursuing leads to identify and apprehend those behind the large-scale cultivation. They aim to establish possible links to a wider narcotics network, which could reveal more about the scale and organization of drug trafficking in the region.
