Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has directed government agencies to accelerate ongoing flood mitigation measures in Nairobi ahead of the expected El Niño rains.
Speaking in Karen, Nairobi County, on Thursday, September 24, 2026, Kindiki held a meeting with heads of roads, energy and water agencies, alongside representatives of the State Departments for Energy, Roads and Urban Development and the Nairobi County Government.
The meeting brought together officials from the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), Kenya Power and the Nairobi Rivers Commission.
Kindiki said Nairobi's exposure to the expected rains would vary due to its population, geographical situation and other urban dynamics.
The officials agreed to expedite ongoing dredging works, open up drainage systems and inspect power transmission lines as part of efforts to minimise the impact of the rains.
The Deputy President assured Nairobi residents of the government's commitment to reducing potential loss of lives and property while urging the public to adhere to safety directives.
He said the government would provide food, non-food items and medical assistance to people affected by the rains.
Kindiki also stated that residents requiring evacuation would be relocated to safer areas humanely as authorities continued implementing measures to mitigate the effects of the expected weather conditions.
