President William Ruto says Kenya is updating its anti-doping framework to meet revised rules from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), due to take effect in January 2027.

Ruto made the remarks after meeting WADA President Witold Bańka at State House in Nairobi on Monday, October 5. He said Kenya had strengthened its anti-doping framework since enacting the Anti-Doping Act in 2016 as new challenges emerged.

The government has prepared a draft amendment to the Act, alongside draft rules and a national policy. The proposals are intended to bring Kenya’s system into line with the revised WADA Code. The 2016 Act established the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya.

Ruto said the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ Anti-Narcotics Unit would join the broader effort to combat doping. The unit investigates drug offences and shares intelligence with other agencies.

He also pointed to investment in sports infrastructure, saying it would help develop talent and enable young people to benefit from their skills.
