A caregiver accused of stealing KSh394,000 raised by well-wishers to support a woman living with a disability has appeared before a Kabarnet court.
Jelagat Chepkong’a, who was caring for Gladys Jepkemei Chepyegon, was arraigned on Wednesday and denied charges of stealing the money through a phone transfer.
Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Purity Kosgei, Chepkong’a pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
The prosecution told the court that the accused allegedly stole the money between April 1 and April 30, 2026, and retained it despite allegedly knowing that it did not rightfully belong to her.
She faces two counts of stealing contrary to Section 268(1), as read with Section 275 of the Penal Code. She also faces an alternative charge of handling stolen property contrary to Section 322(1) and (2) of the Penal Code.
The money was reportedly raised by well-wishers in April 2026 to help purchase prosthetic arms for Chepyegon, who lost both hands following an illness.
The court released Chepkong’a on a KSh100,000 bond or KSh50,000 cash bail.
The case will be mentioned on September 30, 2026.
