Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has declared his readiness for the Nairobi senatorial contest after East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga announced her intention to vie for the seat in the 2027 General Election.

In a post on X on Thursday, October 15, 2026, Jalang’o wrote, “To the wire!! Iam ready!!” in a brief response following Winnie’s announcement during the first anniversary commemoration of her late father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in Bondo, Siaya County.

Jalang’o’s response signals his willingness to face competition for the seat, which he had already expressed interest in contesting earlier this year.

Winnie announced her bid during the memorial event at Migwena Cultural and Sports Ground, saying she saw an opportunity to contest the Nairobi Senate seat as incumbent Senator Edwin Sifuna seeks higher political office.

“Let it not be a rumour. As Edwin Sifuna searches for higher offices, I see kuna space, kuna nafasi hapo Nairobi. And that’s why I have decided that I will stand for the Senate of Nairobi County,” Winnie said.

She also called on young people to pursue elective positions, saying she intended to work alongside them rather than undertake the political journey alone.

Jalang’o had declared his interest in the Nairobi Senate seat in February 2026, citing his experience engaging with residents and his desire to strengthen oversight of public resources.

The Lang’ata MP has argued that effective supervision of county funds is essential to improving service delivery in Nairobi. He has also expressed confidence in his ability to serve residents beyond his current constituency.

Winnie’s entry into the race introduces another prominent figure into the contest for the seat, with both politicians linked to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The party’s nomination process is likely to be a key factor in determining its eventual candidate.

ODM deputy leader and Kisii Governor Simba Arati said on Thursday that the party would conduct free and fair nominations for elective positions ahead of the 2027 General Election, specifically including the Nairobi Senate seat.

The assurance comes as attention turns to how ODM will manage competition among aspirants seeking its ticket. The party has yet to conclude the nomination process for the Nairobi seat.

The Nairobi senatorial contest is expected to attract further political attention as candidates clarify their ambitions, build support and prepare for party nominations ahead of the 2027 polls.
