The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened an investigation into the death of Dennis Aremo Osiemo, who died while in police custody at Narumoru Police Station in Nyeri County.
Osiemo died on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the station in Kieni East Sub-County. Following the incident, IPOA deployed investigators to establish the circumstances leading to his death.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 23, IPOA Chairperson Dr Duncan Owang’ Oburu confirmed that the deceased’s body had been moved to the Narumoru Level 4 Hospital Mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination to be conducted in the presence of IPOA investigators and family members.
The authority said its preliminary findings established that Osiemo had been arrested on Friday, September 18, by DCI officers assisted by personnel from Keroka Police Station in Nyamira County. The arrest was reportedly linked to an assault case.
IPOA said it was continuing with the necessary investigative procedures in accordance with its mandate.
The oversight authority has pledged to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death through a prompt, impartial and conclusive investigation.
It also acknowledged public concern over the incident and assured Osiemo’s family that the matter was receiving the attention it deserved.
IPOA said it would issue further updates once the investigation is completed.
