Residents of Simbi Kogembo Sub-location in Karachuonyo Constituency, Homa Bay County, have urged the county government to expedite the clearing of drainage systems ahead of the anticipated El Niño rains. With the rainy season approaching, locals in Kamuga, Nyaola, Kolonde, and Kosano villages are concerned about the perennial flooding that has displaced hundreds of families and caused extensive damage to property.
The residents are calling for the county government to complete drainage works in the area before the rains intensify. They warn that blocked and poorly maintained drainage systems could exacerbate flooding and expose more households to significant losses. Last week, the county government, through the Department of Disaster Management, initiated preparations for the anticipated El Niño rains, focusing on areas prone to flooding.
The measures being implemented include clearing and de-silting drainage systems and maintaining dykes along major rivers in flood-prone areas to improve water flow, contain overflowing rivers, and protect communities living in low-lying areas. Speaking at Nyaola village, residents led by Rose Seda emphasized the need for the county government to expedite these works, stating that any delays could leave communities vulnerable when the rains begin.
The residents are calling for urgent intervention to ensure that drainage channels are clear and dykes are reinforced before the expected heavy rains. As the El Niño rains approach, the focus remains on safeguarding lives and property in Homa Bay County.
