Kisii Governor Simba Arati has expressed deep shock and sorrow following a tragic road accident that occurred at Waumini Plaza in Kisii Town. The accident, which claimed the lives of five individuals and left several others injured, has prompted the governor to take decisive action to prevent future tragedies. In a heartfelt statement, Governor Arati extended his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones, assuring them of the County Government of Kisii's support during this difficult time. He also promised that those injured would receive urgent and comprehensive medical care at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, directing the County Department of Health and Disaster Management to prioritize their treatment.
The accident has brought to the forefront the pressing issue of road safety within Kisii Town, particularly concerning the movement of heavy commercial trucks and lorries through the congested central business district. Governor Arati emphasized the need for immediate action, highlighting that the continued presence of these vehicles poses a significant risk to the safety of residents and road users. In response, he has instructed the county to engage with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to enforce the diversion of heavy trucks to alternative routes. These routes include the Nyambera Bypass and the Stadium–Suneka route, which are expected to alleviate congestion and reduce the risk of accidents in the town center.
To further enhance road safety, the county enforcement team has been tasked with collaborating with traffic police to prevent the illegal parking of lorries within Kisii Town, particularly around the Waumini area, which has been identified as a high-risk zone. Governor Arati has also ordered a comprehensive safety audit of the Waumini Plaza blackspot to identify and address any underlying issues that may contribute to accidents in the area.
In his statement, Governor Arati urged all drivers and road users to exercise heightened caution, especially during the rainy season when road conditions can be particularly hazardous.
