Former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday joined political leaders and mourners at the burial service of Mwalimu Jackson Karua, father of PLP leader Martha Karua, in Kirinyaga.

The burial ceremony is underway at Mugumo Primary School grounds, where ACK Bishop Joseph Karimi Kibucwa is leading the service.

Among the leaders in attendance are former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, UDA Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, Siaya Governor James Orengo, former Attorney-General Justin Muturi and former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, among others.

Uhuru's arrival was met with cheers from mourners and other attendees, with the former president also seen interacting with Sifuna during the ceremony.

The gathering has brought together leaders from across Kenya’s political divide, with the presence of Uhuru and opposition figures drawing particular attention.

President William Ruto has in the past accused Uhuru of supporting and financing opposition activities, repeatedly referring to him as a political “sponsor” of the opposition. Uhuru has maintained a relatively low profile in active party politics since leaving office in 2022, although his public appearances alongside opposition figures have continued to attract political interest.

The leaders gathered in Kirinyaga to pay their final respects to Mwalimu Jackson Karua and stand with the Karua family during the funeral service.
