Detectives have uncovered a suspected illicit cigarette distribution network in Githunguri Township, Kiambu County, following an intelligence-led operation targeting a businessman suspected of dealing in uncustomed and smuggled cigarettes.
The operation targeted Patrick Muiruri Mwangi, who detectives suspect is involved in the illegal sale and distribution of cigarettes.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, detectives conducted undercover surveillance on two premises linked to Mwangi before raiding the locations.
A search uncovered assorted boxes and loose packets of cigarettes, as well as bundles of Kenya Revenue Authority excise duty stamps suspected to be counterfeit.
The premises have since been secured as detectives await the KRA Investigations and Enforcement team to examine the seized items and determine the extent of the suspected illicit trade.
Mwangi, however, managed to evade arrest and remains at large as detectives pursue leads to locate and apprehend him.
