Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Garissa have arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of killing US national Osman Aweys Abdi during a robbery in Garissa.

Muhiyadin Abdi Sheikh was arrested in Kabete, Nairobi, following an intelligence-led operation mounted by DCI detectives after he went into hiding.

Osman was attacked on May 28, 2026, near Abubeida School in Bulla Mzuri, about five kilometres north of Iftin Police Station. He sustained a stab wound to the left thigh and was also struck with a blunt object on the left side of his head before his mobile phone was stolen.

His brother was alerted by a well-wisher who had obtained his contact details from the victim. He rushed to the scene and found Osman in pain before taking him to Antalya Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body was later transferred to Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital pending a postmortem examination as detectives began investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Muhiyadin is alleged to have fled the area following the incident, prompting detectives to launch a manhunt. After several months of investigations and surveillance, officers traced him to a hideout in Kabete, Nairobi, where he was arrested.

He is currently being held at Kasarani Police Station and is expected to be escorted to Garissa to face murder charges.

The DCI says the arrest demonstrates its resolve to pursue suspects regardless of how long they remain in hiding, assuring that detectives will continue following leads until those responsible for serious crimes are brought before the law.
