The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a man accused of publishing online messages threatening members of the Kikuyu community living in the Rift Valley, as authorities intensify efforts to curb hate speech and incitement ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The suspect, identified as William Owuor Ochieng, was apprehended in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) following investigations into content allegedly shared through a Facebook account operating under the name “William Jahome.”
According to the DCI, the posts contained threats, calls for violence and messages targeting a particular ethnic community. The suspect is alleged to have urged Kikuyus living in the Rift Valley region to leave the area before the next General Election.
The alleged messages have raised concerns about the potential use of social media platforms to spread ethnic hostility and heighten tensions as the country approaches another election period.
Detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB), working alongside the Operations Action Team at DCI headquarters, pursued the case before tracing and arresting the suspect in Nairobi.
Following his arrest, Ochieng was escorted to DCI headquarters for further processing. The Directorate said he remained in custody as he awaited arraignment in court.
The arrest comes amid renewed attention on the role of online platforms in shaping political conversations and the risks posed by content that targets communities along ethnic lines.
Content that encourages hostility against particular communities can heighten tensions and create fears about public safety, particularly during politically sensitive periods.
In its statement, the DCI warned members of the public against using digital platforms to issue threats, encourage violence or promote ethnic hostility.
The Directorate said it remained committed to protecting lives, maintaining public order and safeguarding national security as preparations for the 2027 General Election continue.
It also cautioned that individuals found engaging in unlawful online activities would face action in accordance with the law.
The case highlights the scrutiny facing online content that authorities believe could threaten peaceful coexistence among communities.
Investigations and court proceedings are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged posts and determine whether the suspect committed any offence.
