Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick and captain Bruno Fernandes have held face-to-face talks to resolve tensions following their public disagreement over tactics, with the club seeking to restore unity ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea.
The meeting took place at United’s Carrington training ground on Tuesday, October 27, following a turbulent period in which Fernandes questioned the team’s tactical approach after a 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League.
The discussions were open and frank, with both men determined to refocus their efforts on improving the team’s performances. However, it remains unclear whether Fernandes apologised for his public criticism of the coaching staff.
The talks came two days after Fernandes was left on the bench throughout United’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, October 25. Carrick described his decision to drop the captain as “pure football”, insisting that team selection was based on what he believed would deliver the best performance.
“Picking the team is always a difficult decision. We’ve got to make what we feel is the right one for the team to try to get the performance we want,” Carrick said.
The disagreement escalated after Fernandes questioned United’s decision not to press opponents aggressively during the defeat to Como, arguing that the approach gave their opponents too much time on the ball and allowed them to build confidence.
The Portugal international said the responsibility for the tactical decisions rested with Carrick and his coaching staff, adding that United needed to take more risks by pressing higher up the pitch and making opponents uncomfortable.
“That’s on the manager and on the staff to see it, it’s not on me,” Fernandes said after the Como defeat.
His comments added to the pressure on Carrick, whose position had come under scrutiny following United’s poor run of results. The club’s senior officials had also held discussions about the head coach’s future after the Bournemouth loss, but Carrick remained in charge for the trip to Chelsea.
The meeting between Carrick and Fernandes was held alongside a separate gathering involving the wider squad. Players and staff acknowledged that performances had fallen below expectations and expressed renewed determination to improve immediately.
Fernandes is expected to be in contention for United’s Premier League encounter against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31, although Carrick will make the final decision on his involvement.
The fixture presents an important opportunity for United to respond to their recent setbacks, with the relationship between the head coach and his captain likely to remain under scrutiny.
For Carrick, restoring consistency and unity within the squad will be crucial as he attempts to improve results and strengthen his position. For Fernandes, the immediate challenge will be to turn the renewed commitment into performances on the pitch as United seek to end their poor run.
