A sombre mood has engulfed Segerot village in Chepalungu, Bomet County, after a nurse allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life in a suspected domestic dispute. The tragic incident has left the local community in shock, as many residents struggle to come to terms with the violent turn of events that unfolded within what was thought to be a typical family home.
The woman, identified as 40-year-old Viola Kirui, was found dead on a bed inside the couple’s home, while her husband’s body was discovered hanging from a tree within the compound. The stark contrast between the two scenes has raised questions about the circumstances that led to such a devastating outcome.
According to Cheboin Sub-location Assistant Chief Daisy Sawe, the man, who was also in his 40s and worked as a nurse at Longisa County Referral Hospital, is suspected of strangling his wife, who was a teacher, before hanging himself. This tragic event highlights the often-hidden struggles faced by couples, where underlying issues can escalate into violence.
A suspected injectable substance was also reportedly found inside the bedroom where Viola’s body was discovered. The presence of this substance adds another layer of complexity to the investigation, as authorities work to determine whether it played a role in the events that transpired.
The assistant chief said the couple had allegedly been experiencing frequent disagreements, with relatives occasionally intervening in an effort to resolve their differences. This information suggests that there may have been ongoing tensions in the relationship, which ultimately culminated in this heartbreaking incident. Community members have expressed their disbelief, noting that they had not been aware of the severity of the couple's issues.
Police officers from Bomet Central Police Station visited the scene and moved the bodies to Longisa County Referral Hospital mortuary. The swift response from law enforcement indicates the seriousness with which they are treating this case, as they aim to gather all relevant evidence.
Postmortems are expected to be conducted as police continue investigations into the incident. The results of these examinations may provide further insights into the tragic circumstances surrounding the deaths, and whether any additional factors contributed to this devastating outcome. As the community mourns the loss of Viola Kirui and her husband, there is a growing call for increased awareness and resources to address domestic disputes and mental health issues, which can often lead to such tragic outcomes.
