Bamburi Cement PLC has defied economic challenges in the first half of this year to register a remarkable increase in its pre-tax profits, rising to Ksh621 million from Ksh124 million in the same period of 2022. This significant growth is attributed to topline growth and stringent cost containment measures implemented during the review period. The substantial rise in profits before taxation also led to a 260 percent increase in cash generated from operations, which soared to Ksh2.8 billion from Ksh1.8 billion for the same period last year.

The impressive financial performance comes amidst a challenging economic environment characterized by high inflation rates and a weakening Kenyan shilling, which have adversely impacted production costs. Despite these hurdles, Bamburi Cement has demonstrated resilience and adaptability. Bamburi Cement Group Managing Director Mohit Kapoor emphasized the company's commitment to delivering strong results, stating, “The 2023 first-half performance is a clear demonstration of our reliance, adaptability, customer focus and operational efficiency. We remain consistent in providing quality products and services through innovation to bolster topline growth as well as maintaining effective cost management measures that have resulted in business stability even with the unforeseen challenging occurrences.”

However, the company faced a setback in Uganda, where a tax settlement affected net profits, resulting in a decline to Ksh88 million from Ksh95 million recorded in the first half of 2022. Despite this dip in net profits, the overall outlook remains positive. Mr. Kapoor expressed optimism about the future, highlighting that Bamburi Cement is well-positioned to remain profitable as it continues to execute its operational strategies and commercial excellence to enhance positive results growth.

Bamburi Cement Group Chairman Dr. John Simba also commented on the results, reinforcing the company's strategic vision. “As a market leader, our vision and business strategies remain top-notch to deliver quality product and services while ensuring shareholder value. We remain steadfast in our efforts to drive positive performance in the second half of 2023,” he said.

The company's ability to navigate through economic adversities while maintaining a focus on innovation and operational efficiency underscores its position as a leading player in the cement industry. As it looks ahead, Bamburi Cement aims to continue leveraging its strategic initiatives to sustain growth and enhance shareholder value.
