The African Union (AU) Commission has condemned an attack attributed to Yemen’s Houthi movement against King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which reportedly killed 12 people and injured more than 300 others.

In a statement dated October 11, 2026, the Commission said the attack, which allegedly occurred on October 10, had caused significant casualties, according to Saudi authorities.

The continental body expressed solidarity with the Government and people of Saudi Arabia, sending condolences to the families of those killed and the countries affected by the incident.

It also wished those injured a speedy recovery, while calling for urgent measures to prevent further violence and protect civilians.

“The Commission underscores that civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected in accordance with international law and must never be targeted,” the statement read.

The AU Commission called for an immediate cessation of attacks and urgent de-escalation, warning of the need to prevent further escalation and safeguard regional peace and security.

The incident adds to concerns over regional security and the potential consequences of attacks on critical civilian infrastructure, including airports, which serve as essential hubs for passenger travel, commerce and humanitarian operations.

The African Union reiterated the importance of respecting international law and protecting civilian lives amid ongoing regional tensions.

The Commission's statement did not provide further details about the circumstances of the attack or identify the specific weapons allegedly used.

The reported casualties and attribution of the attack were based on information cited from Saudi authorities in the AU statement.

The development is likely to intensify calls for restraint and diplomatic efforts to prevent further deterioration of the security situation in the region.

The AU Commission's response highlights growing international concern over attacks that threaten civilian safety and critical infrastructure in the Middle East.

The call for an immediate cessation of hostilities also underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement and regional cooperation in preventing further loss of life.

The Commission urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and prioritise peace and stability in the region.
