Security has been heightened across Uasin Gishu County as Eldoret prepares to host this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20, with authorities assuring residents and visitors of a safe environment during the national event.
Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Dr Edisson Nyale said security agencies have stepped up coordination ahead of the celebrations, with officers expected to maintain a strong presence in key areas across Eldoret.
Nyale said security arrangements were also being put in place in hotels and other facilities where visitors and guests attending the celebrations are expected to stay.
He said the aim was to ensure that residents, visitors and businesses continue with their normal activities without unnecessary disruptions as the county receives increased numbers of people ahead of the event.
The security preparations come as Eldoret undergoes major changes ahead of the celebrations, with road works and other infrastructure improvements being undertaken in different parts of the city.
The main celebrations will be held at Kipchoge Keino Stadium, which is currently undergoing rehabilitation and upgrading works. The latest government update put the stadium’s completion at about 68 per cent, with construction teams working for extended hours to meet the October deadline.
Nyale said the stadium works had reached about 70 per cent but noted that a shortage of workers remained one of the challenges facing the project. The works are being carried out by the Ministry of Sports with support and supervision from the Ministry of Defence.
The preparations come against the backdrop of concerns raised by some young people in Uasin Gishu over limited employment opportunities, even as major projects continue in the county.
This year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations will be jointly hosted by Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, marking the first time the three counties are co-hosting the national event. The celebrations will include activities focusing on security, sports and the economy.
Police leadership has also called for increased vigilance in Eldoret ahead of the celebrations, with officers urged to maintain professionalism while ensuring the city remains secure.
