Two police officers based at Kinjo Police Patrol Base in Meru County are being investigated over allegations of sexually assaulting a three-and-a-half-year-old girl at a police residential unit.

The officers, identified as Police Constables Nicholas Njagi and James Mutabari, were taken into custody at Kariene Police Station on October 11, 2026, following a complaint by the child's mother.

The case came to light on the evening of October 9, when the mother, who lives in Kinjo Market, reportedly noticed that her daughter was distressed after spending time outside.

According to details contained in police reports, the child told her mother that a man she called “Baba” had carried her on his shoulders to his residence, where the alleged incident occurred.

Two other children, aged seven and twelve, are listed as witnesses. They had reportedly been asked to search for the girl and later found her inside a house linked to Constable Njagi.

The girl was taken to Nairobi Women's Hospital in Meru for medical assessment. A doctor documented several injuries in a P3 medical form, with the findings reported to be consistent with the allegations.

Following the complaint, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Imenti Central began examining the circumstances of the incident.

They visited and processed the suspected scene, collecting two bedsheets for forensic analysis.

Investigators later organised an identification parade at Kariene Police Station. Police reports indicate that the child identified both officers during the exercise.

The two constables remain in custody as detectives work to complete the inquiry.

They are expected to appear before Githongo Law Courts, where prosecutors intend to request additional time to hold them while investigations continue.

The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against the officers have not been tested in court. Both suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
