Detectives in Moyale, Marsabit County, have arrested two men and recovered a Toyota Prado suspected to have been fraudulently acquired following an intelligence-led operation in the town.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the vehicle, a white Toyota Prado registration number KAR 555M, was intercepted by detectives during the operation.
The two suspects arrested in connection with the vehicle were identified as 26-year-old Mohamed Amin, who was driving the Prado, and his passenger, 22-year-old Ahmed Abdulahi Hajji.
According to the DCI, preliminary checks conducted after the vehicle was intercepted raised questions about its registration and ownership.
Detectives established that the chassis number on the vehicle did not match the registration details held by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
The discrepancy raised suspicion that the vehicle may have been tampered with or fraudulently registered.
The detectives subsequently conducted a thorough search of the Prado as they continued investigations into its suspected fraudulent acquisition.
During the search, officers recovered an empty pistol magazine and a pistol holster. The two items were reportedly concealed inside the vehicle’s glove compartment.
Detectives also recovered rolls of bhang from the vehicle, adding another dimension to the ongoing investigations.
The DCI did not immediately disclose where the vehicle was allegedly stolen from or the circumstances under which it came into the possession of the two suspects.
The recovery is part of investigations aimed at establishing the vehicle’s true ownership, how its registration details were allegedly altered and whether the suspects were part of a wider network involved in vehicle-related fraud.
The two suspects remain in police custody as detectives complete the investigations and process them for arraignment in court.
Authorities are expected to present the suspects before court, where the prosecution will outline the charges against them.
The DCI has continued to urge members of the public to provide information that could assist in investigations into criminal activities.
Members of the public can report suspected criminal activity anonymously through the DCI’s toll-free number 0800 722 203 or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
