A tragic incident unfolded in Kisumu Ndogo, on the outskirts of Malindi town, where a sixteen-year-old handicapped girl perished in a house fire. The fire broke out around 10 am, engulfing the family home and leaving the community in shock. The area chief, Nicodemus Mwayele, confirmed the incident, noting that both parents of the deceased were not at home when the fire erupted. Investigations have been launched to ascertain the cause of the fire, as the circumstances surrounding the blaze remain unclear.

Mary Njoki, the mother of the deceased, recounted the harrowing experience. She had left the house briefly to fetch breakfast for her daughter, only to return to the devastating sight of her home consumed by flames. "She was my first child, it’s really hurting me," Njoki lamented, her voice filled with grief. Her husband, who was at work at the time, received the heartbreaking news through a phone call from a neighbour. The family is struggling to come to terms with the loss of their beloved daughter, who was alone in the house when the fire started.

Efforts to extinguish the fire were hampered by several challenges. Firefighters, led by Josphat Wario, faced difficulties accessing the scene due to the narrow roads and the presence of onlookers. Wario emphasized the importance of planning for emergencies, urging residents to consider leaving adequate space for rescue vehicles when constructing homes. "We responded to a phone call from the area chief but due to limited road space, we could not quickly put out the fire," Wario explained.

The incident has raised concerns about fire safety and accessibility in the area, highlighting the need for better infrastructure and emergency preparedness. The community is left grappling with the loss, as they rally around the grieving family. The tragic death of the young girl serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by those with disabilities, especially in emergency situations. As investigations continue, the community hopes for answers and measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
