Six people have been killed and scores injured after a lorry collided with a public service vehicle (PSV) at Kondoo along the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway in a road accident that has once again raised concerns over safety on the busy route.
The accident occurred in the morning when the lorry reportedly crashed into the PSV, which was travelling towards Nakuru, as its driver attempted to avoid an oncoming Succeed vehicle.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani confirmed the incident, saying the driver of the PSV was among those who lost their lives.
The injured passengers were rushed to different health facilities for treatment, while the bodies of the six victims were transferred to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary in Eldoret.
Sicharani cautioned motorists to exercise heightened caution, noting that road accidents have been on the increase.
He urged drivers to observe traffic regulations, avoid dangerous manoeuvres and remain alert, particularly along busy highway sections.
The latest crash adds to a series of fatal accidents reported along the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway, particularly on stretches around Burnt Forest, Timboroa, Salgaa, Migaa and other sections of the route.
In July 2026, seven people were initially confirmed dead after a trailer collided with two matatus at Mlima Punda, near Lessos Junction.
The trailer was reportedly attempting to overtake while descending a hill when it crashed head-on into the oncoming public service vehicles. The death toll later rose to 11, according to subsequent reports.
In June 2026, another five people died in a collision involving a trailer and a tractor near Matharu Centre, a few kilometres from Burnt Forest.
Initial investigations suggested that the lorry may have lost its brakes while descending a steep section of the highway before crashing into the tractor, which was carrying four people.
The highway also witnessed another fatal crash in July 2026 at the Nyanja black spot in Kuresoi North, where six people died after a trailer collided head-on with a Nissan Hiace matatu.
Police said the matatu was carrying 11 passengers when the collision occurred, with two survivors sustaining serious injuries.
In August 2024, at least 13 people were killed and 55 injured in a multiple-vehicle accident at Migaa, while another crash at the nearby Twin Bridge area days later left one person dead and several others injured.
The repeated incidents have raised concerns over the safety of the highway, which serves as a major transport corridor connecting Nairobi and the Rift Valley to western Kenya and neighbouring regions.
Police have urged motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking, maintain safe speeds and ensure their vehicles are mechanically sound, particularly when negotiating steep sections of the highway.
Investigations into the Kondoo accident are expected to establish the exact sequence of events that led to the collision.
The injured passengers are receiving treatment at different health facilities, as families await further information on the victims.
