Police in Mombasa have shot dead a criminal suspect in Bamburi, Kisauni Sub County, in a continued crackdown on gang-related activities in the region. The suspect, whose age is estimated to be between 18 and 22 years, was reportedly a member of the notorious Wakali Kwanza gang. This gang has been a source of fear and insecurity among residents of Kisauni Sub County due to their violent activities.
The incident occurred on Sunday, following a tip-off from vigilant members of the public, according to Julius Kiragu, the Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) in Kisauni. Kiragu, while addressing journalists in Mombasa on Monday, emphasized the importance of community cooperation in combating crime. He urged residents to continue reporting any suspicious activities or individuals to the authorities, assuring them that their safety remains a top priority for the police.
In his statement, Kiragu also called on both public and private hospital staff to be vigilant and report any individuals seeking treatment for bullet wounds. This measure is part of a broader strategy to track down and apprehend gang members who may have been injured during police operations. “The operation has been going on and will continue throughout this festive season. We want to thank members of the public for their support,” Kiragu stated, highlighting the ongoing efforts to restore peace and security in the area.
The Wakali Kwanza gang, known for its violent attacks, was reportedly involved in an incident on Sunday, November 25, where a group of 10 gang members armed with machetes and knives attacked residents in Kisauni and Nyali. This attack left several individuals with deep cuts, further escalating the urgency for police intervention. During the recent operation, police managed to recover three machetes, although the other suspects, estimated to be between six to eight young men, managed to escape, some with deep cuts.
The body of the deceased suspect is currently at the Coast General Hospital mortuary, awaiting identification. The police are continuing their investigations and are determined to apprehend the remaining gang members. The crackdown on gangs like Wakali Kwanza is part of a broader effort to ensure the safety and security of Mombasa residents, particularly during the festive season when crime rates often surge.
