Police in Diani have shot dead a terror suspect and his two children in a dramatic confrontation in Kibundani, Msambweni sub-county. The incident, which has sparked concern and debate over police operations, occurred late at night at around 23:00 hours. According to Kwale police commander Joseph Nthenge, the suspect, identified as Mohammed Mapenzi, also known as Spanya, was killed after he allegedly attacked police officers with a grenade.

Commander Nthenge detailed the sequence of events, explaining that the officers were in the process of executing a raid on Mapenzi's residence when the suspect unexpectedly opened his door and hurled a grenade at them. The explosive device injured one officer, prompting the police to respond with lethal force. "His act prompted the officers to fatally shoot him alongside his two children he was using as a shield," Nthenge stated, highlighting the tragic use of children in the confrontation.

The operation was part of a broader crackdown on suspected terrorist activities in the region. The police had initially targeted the home of Saidi Chitswa, alias Ninja, who is alleged to be a recruiter for the militant group Al-Shabaab. Ninja, who was reportedly planning attacks on a police station, was apprehended and, under interrogation, led the authorities to Mapenzi's house. This connection underscores the ongoing security challenges posed by extremist groups in Kenya's coastal areas.

In the aftermath of the shootout, Mapenzi's wife and three other children were found to have sustained bullet wounds. They were promptly taken to Msambweni Referral Hospital for medical treatment. The police also recovered various items from the residence, including jungle uniforms and a live grenade, which suggest the suspect's involvement in militant activities.

Ninja and an associate were arrested and are currently in custody, awaiting formal charges in court. The bodies of Mapenzi and his children have been transported to Kwale Hospital Mortuary, where they will undergo postmortem examinations.

This incident highlights the delicate balance between maintaining national security and protecting human rights, as the use of force by police in such operations remains a contentious issue. The authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help combat terrorism in the region.
