A sombre mood engulfed the police fraternity in Gamba, Tana River County, following the tragic death of a senior police officer who fell from a storey building. The incident has left the local community and the police force in shock, as details surrounding the fall remain unclear. According to police officers who were present at the scene, the officer was seen falling from the house, but no further explanation has been provided regarding the circumstances leading to the fall. This has left relatives struggling to comprehend how a man living alone could meet such a fate.
The deputy Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Alfred Jillo, confirmed the officer's death shortly after he was brought to Malindi Hospital. The officer had initially been rushed to Garsen Health Centre, where he developed complications before being transferred to Malindi. Police commander Frederick Ochieng stated that the officer fell from the balcony of the upper apartment of a building located at Gamba Police Station. "Yes, it's true the officer died upon arrival at Malindi Hospital after developing complications at Garsen Health Centre, where he was earlier rushed," Ochieng said. The officer's body is currently at Malindi District Hospital mortuary, awaiting a postmortem examination.
The death of an officer in service is a significant event that reverberates throughout the National Police Service, especially in rural postings like Gamba, where the police community is tightly knit. Colleagues of the deceased have described him as a dedicated officer, and counselling services are typically provided to officers who witness such traumatic incidents to help them cope with the emotional aftermath.
In line with standard procedures, an investigation is expected to be launched to determine the cause of death. Whenever a death occurs within a police facility or involves an officer, a report must be made to senior command, and an inquest is usually opened. The postmortem examination will aim to establish whether the fall was accidental, the result of a medical episode such as fainting, or due to other circumstances.
The incident also brings to light ongoing concerns about the maintenance of residential buildings within police stations across Kenya. These buildings often house officers and their families, and issues such as the safety of railings and balconies have previously been raised by police welfare associations. The tragic event in Gamba may prompt renewed scrutiny and calls for improved safety measures in police housing facilities.
