Property worth millions of shillings was destroyed in a devastating fire incident that occurred mid-morning on Tuesday along Kenyatta Avenue in Mombasa County. The blaze, which broke out around 10 am, originated in one of the shops located in the bustling Majengo area and rapidly spread to adjacent businesses, drawing a large crowd of onlookers. The swift response by the county's fire brigade was instrumental in containing the flames, but not before they had consumed property valued at over Ksh 6 million.
One of the affected traders, who requested anonymity, recounted the harrowing experience to the media. "The fire started in a neighboring shop and then spread to my premises," he said. His shop, which specialized in household items such as mattresses and carpets, was completely gutted by the fire, leaving him with nothing to salvage. The trader estimated his losses at Ksh 4 million for the goods, in addition to Ksh 2 million for the shop itself, which was reduced to ashes.
As the fire brigade and security personnel assessed the damage, the scene was one of devastation and disbelief. The affected traders and shop owners were left counting their losses, with many expressing concerns about the future of their businesses. The incident has raised questions about fire safety measures and preparedness in the area, given the rapid spread of the fire and the significant damage it caused.
Hussein Swaleh, a tenant and trader whose shop was next to the origin of the fire, refuted allegations that the blaze started in his premises. Although the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, Swaleh speculated that a power outage might have been a contributing factor. "There was a power outage before the fire started, and it could have been the cause," he suggested.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident, which has left the affected traders and the local community in shock. The fire has highlighted the need for improved fire safety measures and emergency response strategies in commercial areas to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. As investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the fire, the traders are left to grapple with the aftermath and the daunting task of rebuilding their livelihoods.
