The National Land Commission (NLC) has committed to resolving the longstanding issue of historical land injustices in Taita Taveta County. This assurance was given during a meeting held in the office of Governor Granton Samboja on Thursday. Kazungu Kambi, one of the NLC commissioners, emphasized the commission's determination to address these persistent challenges decisively, ensuring that the residents of Taita Taveta can fully enjoy their rightful entitlements to land.

NLC's commitment to land issues

Kazungu Kambi, who was visiting Governor Samboja in his newly inaugurated offices in Mwatate, highlighted that the NLC's immediate focus would be on expediting the resolution of all outstanding issues concerning the administration of community land and forests. "NLC will ensure that displaced persons, as is the current case at Voi Primary School, are settled as quickly as possible," he stated. This remark underscores the urgency with which the commission intends to tackle the displacement problems affecting local communities.

Accompanying Commissioner Kambi were Denis Mutungi, the Taita Taveta County NLC coordinator, and Ms. Damaris Kimondo, the Mwatate Deputy County Commissioner. Their presence signifies a collaborative approach between national and local authorities in addressing land issues that have long plagued the county. The involvement of these officials is crucial in facilitating the implementation of NLC's strategies and ensuring that the solutions are tailored to the specific needs of the region.

Collaboration with local authorities

Governor Samboja, in response, pledged his administration's full support in the NLC's efforts to enhance proper land use and administration in accordance with the law. His commitment reflects a shared vision between the county government and the NLC to bring about sustainable solutions to land-related challenges. The governor's assurance of cooperation is expected to bolster the commission's initiatives and expedite the resolution process.

The meeting was also attended by several key county officials, including Mr. Mwandawiro Mghanga, the Executive Committee Member in charge of land, Reuben Ngeti, the Lands County Chief Officer, Interim County Secretary Mr. Liverson Mghendi, and Director Legal Mr. Edwin Chahilu. Their participation highlights the importance of a coordinated effort in addressing land issues, which are often complex and require input from various stakeholders.

The NLC's initiative in Taita Taveta County is part of a broader national effort to address historical land injustices, which have been a source of conflict and tension in many parts of Kenya. By prioritizing the resolution of these issues, the NLC aims to foster peace, development, and equitable land distribution, ultimately contributing to the county's socio-economic growth.
