Seventeen individuals suspected of being members of the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) have been ordered to remain in custody for an additional 14 days. This decision was made to allow police more time to conduct thorough investigations into charges of inciting violence and organizing a public meeting without notifying the relevant authorities. The suspects were apprehended in the Kibundani area of Diani location, Matuga Subcounty, Kwale County. According to police reports, they were found in possession of unlawful printed materials bearing the slogan "Pwani Si Kenya" and were allegedly holding a meeting without informing security agencies.

The Mombasa Republican Council is a secessionist group that has been pushing for the coastal region's independence from Kenya, claiming historical injustices and marginalization. Their slogan, "Pwani Si Kenya," translates to "The Coast is not Kenya," reflecting their separatist agenda. The group's activities have been a source of concern for the Kenyan government, which views them as a threat to national unity and security.

During their court appearance, the suspects pleaded not guilty before Senior Resident Magistrate Patrick Wambugu. Prosecutor Cecilia Wakoli argued against granting bail, citing the ongoing investigation into whether the suspects were involved in an attack on Diani Police Station officers shortly after the arrest of the 17 MRC members. The prosecutor expressed concerns that the suspects, who hail from different residences, might interfere with the investigation process if released.

Magistrate Wambugu acknowledged the defendants' constitutional right to be granted bail under Article 50 of the Kenyan Constitution. However, he emphasized that the court also has the authority to detain them if it is deemed necessary for the investigation. Given the seriousness of the allegations and the potential link to the police station attack, the magistrate ruled in favor of continued detention until the investigations are concluded.

The court has scheduled the next hearing for April 18, when probation officers are expected to present their reports. This will provide further insight into the case and potentially influence the court's decision regarding the suspects' bail status. The outcome of this case is being closely watched, as it could have significant implications for the government's efforts to maintain peace and security in the coastal region, which has been a hotspot for separatist activities.
