KRA Waives Penalties, Interest Accrued During iTax Downtime

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a waiver of penalties and interest accrued by taxpayers as a result of the recent intermittent downtime of the iTax portal.

In a public notice dated September 16, 2026, KRA said the system downtime affected the normal functioning of return filing and payment services during September.

The Authority said the waiver will be implemented in accordance with Section 89(5A) of the Tax Procedures Act and will cover the verified period during which the affected iTax services were unavailable or intermittently inaccessible.

KRA said it will undertake the necessary system processes to ensure that penalties and interest attributable to the verified period of downtime are waived.

The tax authority apologised for the inconvenience caused and thanked taxpayers for their patience and cooperation.
