A fourth-year student at Kisii University has died after collapsing during a hiking trip at Nyanguru Satellites Hill in Kisii County.

The student, identified as Lawrence Kiprotich from Nakuru County, reportedly collapsed on Saturday evening while participating in an outdoor activity with fellow students.

According to a security officer at Kisii University, the incident occurred while the students were playing during the outing.

Kiprotich was rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) for emergency medical attention but died while undergoing treatment.

The circumstances surrounding his collapse remain unclear, with the cause of death yet to be established.

His body has since been moved to the KTRH mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination to determine what led to his death.

Nyanguru Hill, also known as Nyanguru peak, is a natural elevation in Kisii County, standing at approximately 1,929 metres above sea level.

The geographical feature lies near Kegati village and Makutano Market, within the wider Kisii highlands.

Its elevated terrain makes it a distinctive natural landmark in the area.

The wider Kisii region is characterised by rolling hills, ridges and valleys, providing opportunities for outdoor recreation and exploration.

Hiking in the area can offer participants an opportunity to exercise while enjoying views of the surrounding countryside.

However, the terrain and physical demands of such activities can vary depending on the route taken and the conditions on the day.

The incident has raised questions about the circumstances under which Kiprotich collapsed, although there is no confirmed information indicating whether the death was linked to physical exertion or an underlying medical condition.

A postmortem examination is expected to provide further details and help establish the cause of death.

Kiprotich's death is a major loss to his family, friends and fellow students as he was in his fourth year of university studies.

Further details, including whether the university or police have launched formal inquiries into the incident, are yet to be confirmed.
